One of the most common reasons people search for ahm is simple: they want to know the price. ahm has built its name on lower premiums and an easy online quote, but the actual cost depends on the cover you choose and your personal circumstances. This guide explains what ahm health insurance costs across its tiers, what shifts the price up or down, and how an ahm quote compares with the other major funds.
What ahm hospital cover costs
ahm hospital cover runs across six tiers, and the premium rises as the cover broadens. The figures below are for a single in NSW, before the Australian Government Rebate, as at June 2026. At the entry level, ahm Basic hospital costs around $102 a month on its own, or about $120 a month once you pair it with starter dental extras. At the top of the range, ahm Gold, sold as advanced hospital gold, starts at around $245 a month for a single. The Bronze, Bronze Plus and Silver Plus tiers sit between those two points.
What ahm extras cost
ahm extras are priced separately and can be added to hospital cover or, in some cases, taken on their own. Because ahm uses choosable extras, the price depends on how many cover areas you select. Choosing only the areas you will use is the main way ahm members keep their extras premium down.

What affects your ahm premium
Four main factors move an ahm quote up or down, and they apply across all funds.
- The Australian Government Rebate. This income tested rebate reduces hospital and extras premiums by roughly 24% for most people under 65 in the base tier, and most members claim it as a direct reduction. As household income rises, the rebate steps down.
- Your excess. Choosing a higher excess, the amount you pay towards a hospital admission, lowers your premium. ahm offers excess options on its hospital tiers.
- Lifetime Health Cover loading. If you took out hospital cover after 1 July following your 31st birthday, a 2% loading applies for each year without cover, up to 70%, and it clears after 10 continuous years of cover. Whether it applies depends on your circumstances.
- Your state. Premiums vary by state, so an ahm quote in NSW will not match the same cover in Victoria or Queensland.

How ahm prices compare
ahm positions itself as a value brand, but it is not always the lowest once you compare like for like. At the entry Basic level, here is how ahm compares with other funds on Basic hospital paired with starter dental extras, for a single in NSW.

At the Gold level, ahm sits at the lower end of the open funds, close to its parent company. ahm Gold starts around $245 a month, with Medibank Premium Gold alongside it at $243.40. The pattern is consistent. ahm is competitively priced, often near the bottom of the range, but rarely the single cheapest, which is why an ahm quote is most useful when you can see it next to the alternatives.
